Stalking rifles generally have a number of differences from mainstream target or military rifles: they tend to be lighter, have a lower magazine capacity, and are optimised for first round accuracy from a cold barrel. Calibres tend to be around .243 / .270 / .308 in imperial chamberings or 6 to 7.62 mm in those dubious places where the smaller French inch is currency. Stocks are often of polymer or composite as, though highly figured walnut looks superb, it is easily scratched when carried around fields and fired from improvised rests of walls and boulders.
