2013

Our shoot at Sealand in August passed off very pleasurably ! The sun shone all day though there was a challenging shape-shifter of a breeze coming in off the Dee estuary that really kept us on our toes and made the V bulls all the more enjoyable !

Our Chairman spent a leisurely morning observing the abundant wildlife, relaxing in the sun and letting his breakfast settle whilst the rest of us prepared to throw some lead downrange.  The local geese, ‘undreds of ’em, flew over all day in long lazy skeins, clearly aware they are currently out of season. We’d bet they don’t fly directly overhead at 20 feet over the winter months !

Half a mile off to one side a model aircraft club provided excellent entertainment all day as they looped and wheeled, soared and swooped, pausing only for lunch and then again mid-afternoon to gasp in awe, along with we shooters, when a real Spitfire and Hurricane roared over at just under 1,000 feet ! Surely they were arranged just for us.

The ranges at Sealand are very well kept, with firing points at 25, 50, 75, 100, 200 and 300 metres. Everything is in tip top shape and works perfectly: no missing phones, sticking frames or unswept gravel there ! Not a hint of litter or graffiti anywhere. The icing on the cake is the range warden: you couldn’t hope to meet a friendlier, more helpful chap !

The club’s new Mosin Nagant was zeroed and plenty of other rounds were directed towards the target – much of it ending up in the V bull despite the wind ! We fired calibres from the tiny .22 LR (sub-sonic of course, just to make the target markers’ lives a little more difficult) up to an the earth thumping .455 black powder round. Why not come along next time and join in the fun ?

Catton Rifle Sport

Well what can we say? Yet another great day at Catton Park. The shoot was even more well organised than the previous shoot if that was at all possible. It was supported to capacity, unfortunately not by our members, but every stand was well utilized never the less. The sad upshot of this though was that the caterers soon ran out of “ammunition” – venison burgers!

Our members too were soon out of ammunition despite taking loads with us and had to be replenished from our club supply. There was some great accurate shooting from such a wide variety of ranges and targets and everybody seemed to be thoroughly enjoying the day. Even the sun joined in to our delight and most were shooting in shirt sleeves.

Congratulations Carl and Gillian on an other excellent shoot. Shame about the venison burgers!!
